THE ORIGIN of SUPER BEACH 5s RUGBY ~ 45° 41′ 01, 97N / 13° 08′ 22, 35 E
In 1997, in response to calls from Italy’s growing Beach 5’s Rugby community, the Italian Rugby Federation [FIR] officially delegated the LIBR [Lega Italiana Beach Rugby] to organise the first Italian National Beach 5s Rugby Championships.
In 2001, FORUM IULII RUGBY, one of the founding members of both the LIBR and the European Beach Rugby Committee, took the initiative to develop and create a new format of Tournament, one that would promote the sport of Beach 5s Rugby to an even wider audience. This was in a bid to ensure that BEACH 5s Rugby would be played to the highest possible standard.
And so in 2001, at the Italian Adriatic Beach resort of Lignano Sabbiadoro, Super BEACH 5s Rugby was born. The new Tournament was called THE LIGNANO INTERNATIONAL CUP.
