In the last 4 years Belgian Rugby has begun to find its feet on the international stage. At the core of this development is a talented group of highly polished rugby ‘diamonds’. Their strength and cutting edge has led them to become one of the forces in European Beach 5’s rugby circles. It’s therefore with great honour that we welcome our 3rd Challenger for SB5 2014 – Belgiums finest rugby diamonds……THE MAGNETS.
Henry Kissinger once described a Diamond as “a chunk of coal that is made good under pressure.” If there is one Beach 5’s team that has proven its ability to make good under pressure, it’s the MAGNETS. Last season was an outstanding year for them, capturing as they did the 2013 Ameland International (NL) and 2013 Zeebrugge Masters titles. To that they also added a semi-final/4th place finish at LIGNANO. Their consistency last year was such that they were worthy runners-up in the inaugural EBRA European Beach 5s Series. Infact, if Ameland had been a part of the 2013 EBRA Series, the MAGNETS might well have taken last years overall Series title.

Does this auger well for the MAGNETS ? ‘We like to think so,’ says Sander Van Wassenhove, the team’s charismatic player / manager / mentor for the last 4 seasons. ‘We’re determined to retain the Ameland title,’ he said, ‘but we know it’s not going to be an easy passage. Now that it’s part of the 2014 EBRA Series, with valuable Series points up for grabs, we already expect many of Europe’s top sides to make it Ameland. So we’re under no illusion,’ he continued, ‘we’ll have to be 100% on our game to win, from the first 10 minutes to the last.’
When all is said and done, by the time the expanded 2014 EBRA Series reaches it’s final destination at SB5 HQ in LIGNANO on 19-20 July, these rugby diamonds will no doubt have picked up their fair share of scratches.
Will they have enough sparkle and cutting edge to claim the most historic trophy in WORLD BEACH 5’s RUGBY – THE 14th LIGNANO INTERNATIONAL CUP ?
One thing is certain, to achieve it, they’ll definitely have to make seriously good under pressure!
