AUSTRIA – Pirates ‘Eyes on the PRIZE’

When it comes to pirates, these guys aren’t your standard salty sea-faring type. Rather they’re river pirates who ply their trade around the banks of the Danube and Austria’s capital city, Vienna. Regularly their hunger for treasure leads them south in search of the great riches that lie on the shore of Lignano Sabbiadoro. It gives us great pleasure to welcome Challenger No. 10, The Danube Pirates.

Indeed the history of Lignano has been marked by many such raiding parties as this team have been at Lignano since ‘YEAR ZERO’. And for the 13th Edition of the Lignano International Cup they’re coming heavily armed with more than half of the squad having already collected caps at senior international level for Austria, drawn as they are from the country’s best rugby club and current national champions, Rugby Donau Wien.

Infact a federal delegation from Friuli Venezia Giulia, including our own Cesare Zambelli are heading to Lubljiana this weekend to see the FIRA international 15’s fixture between Austria & Slovenia to observe a number of the Austrian squad who will also be in Lignano this summer – namely Michael Kerschbaumer, Johannes Dachler, Max Navas, Sebastian Freydell, Alexander Radomirov.

And come July, for all the Austrian fans who throng to the Beach Arena, they’ll be rocking to Amadeus and no doubt hoping their boys can make it the greatest Pirate raid of all time, by winning the ultimate in Beach 5’s Rugby treasure.

“X” marks the SPOT for all you traditional Pirates out there.
