2012 Referee’s – “The UntouchaBles”

The ‘Referee Panel’ for the 2012 Lignano International Cup, otherwise known as “The Untouchables”, is now finalised and we are pleased to announce that 4 different International Rugby Federations will be represented this year. They are:

  • Dave Drury – WRU [Welsh Rugby Union, Wales]
  • Ged Stone – RFU [Rugby Football Union, England]
  • Vlad Iordachescu – FRR [Federatia Romana de Rugby, Romania]
  • Alan Falzone – FIR [Federazione Italiana Rugby, Italia]
  • Cristian Sandri – FIR [Federazione Italiana Rugby, Italia]

Dave Drury (WRU):[column size=”1-2″ last=”0″ style=”0″]Affiliated to the Welsh Rugby Union, Dave commenced his refereeing career in 1995. He was member of the RFU’s Referee Panel from 2002 – 2005, and since 2005 he has been a member of the Welsh Rugby Union Referee Panel. A keen follower of Rugby 7’s & 10’s formats, Dave has regularly officiated at the Amsterdam 7’s, Benidorm 7’s, Kinsale 7’s, Barcelona 7’s and Leiden 10’s. [/column][column size=”1-2″ last=”1″ style=”0″][frame align=”right”]Dave Drury (centre)[/frame][/column]In the world of Super Beach 5’s Rugby, he holds the record as the most capped referee at the Lignano International Cup, having officiated each year since the tournaments foundation in 2000. With 2012 being his 12th consecutive cap, Dave Drury is without doubt ‘a living Lignano legend’ and in the words of a famous commercial, ‘Probably the most experienced International Beach Fives referee in the world’. Welcome back Dave!

Ged Stone (RFU):

[column size=”1-2″ last=”0″ style=”0″][frame align=”left”]Ged Stone[/frame][/column] [column size=”1-2″ last=”1″ style=”0″]Affiliated to the English Rugby Football Union, Ged has been a referee since 1990. He was a member of the RFU Referees Panel from 2002 – 2005 and is currently a member of the RFU’s Touch Judge Panel.  A long standing supporter of Rugby Sevens, 10’s & Beach Fives, Ged has become a leading referee in these alternative rugby formats and he has officiated at the Kenyan International 7’s (2007), Nakuru 10’s (2007), Kinsale 7’S (1998-2004), Amsterdam 7’S (2002 & 2012), Barcelona 7’S (2006 & 2012).[/column]Ged first refereed at the 2009 Lignano International Cup and has participated every year since. As an elite member of our referee panel, 2012 will be Ged’s 4th consecutive cap. Welcome back Ged!

Vlad Iordachescu (FRR):

[column size=”3-4″ last=”0″ style=”0″]As announced in an earlier article, Vlad will be this years IRB appointed referee at the Lignano International Cup. A native of Romania’s capital, Bucharest, he has been officiating at a senior level since 2002 and is now part of the IRB’s Top Referee Panel.Having refereed at the IRB Nations Cup 2009 – 2011, the 2011 & 2012 European U18 Championships, along with a series of International Sevens tournaments, Vlad will be in the USA (Salt Lake City) from 18th – 30th June to officiate during the IRB 2012 JWRT. We hope he will enjoy his experience in the US and we very much look forward to welcoming him to Lignano Sabbiadoro for his first appearance on Lignano’s golden sands.

Alan Falzone (FIR):

Alan is also a member of the IRB’s Top Panel of International Referee’s. Born in Stuttgart, Germany, he has been officiating since 1995. To date he has referreed at many IRB events including IRB U19 World Cup Dubai (2006), IRB U19 World Cup Ireland (2007), IRB Nations Cup (2008), IRB T.I.P. South Africa (2008), IRB Seven World Series DUBAI 2009/10. At an international level he has taken charge of matches during the U20 Six Nations along with other FIRA matches. And at a European club level has refereed in both Amlin Cup and the Celtic league. This will be Alan’s first appearance at Lignano and we’re delighted to welcome him to the Super Beach 5’s family.

Cristian Sandri (FIR):

[column size=”1-2″ last=”0″ style=”0″]A member of the Italian Rugby Federation panel of Referee’s, Cristian comes from the city of Trieste, just 65km along the Adriatic coast from Lignano. Having started his refereeing career in 1995, Cristian has successfully progressed through the Italian divisions (Serie C & Serie B), and is now part of the Touch Judge panel for Italy’s 2 highest divisions, Eccellenza and Serie A.[/column][column size=”1-2″ last=”1″ style=”0″][frame align=”right”]Cristian Sandri takes charge[/frame][/column]In the 2011/2012 season, Cristian was selected as part of the Italian Federations domestic refereeing panel for Heineken Cup, Amlin Cup and Rabodirect Pro 12 matches, where he acted as the 4th official. Being local to Lignano, he has refereed many times at Super Beach 5’s and is always a highly valued and respected member of our referee panel. Welcome back Cristian!
